Summary
This review considers the challenges and clinical options currently available for diagnosing HIV infection in infants born to HIV- infected women in resource-limited settings. The use of antibody tests, p24 antigen assays, and DNA and RNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques are discussed in the context of increasing access to low-cost diagnostic tools and affordable antiretroviral medications for children.
