Summary
These recommendations are for clinicians and other health care providers who care for HIV-infected children. They provide evidence-based guidelines for preventing and treating opportunistic infections (OIs) among HIV-exposed or HIV-infected children. Treatment and prevention of twenty-two OIs, or groups of OIs, are addressed, including recommendations for preventing exposure to opportunistic pathogens and preventing first episodes of disease by chemoprophylaxis or vaccination (primary prophylaxis), and disease recurrence (secondary prophylaxis). Each OI section includes information on epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment recommendations, monitoring and adverse events, and management of treatment failure. The tables address drugs and doses, drug toxicities and criteria for discontinuing treatment, drug interactions, and immunization schedules.
